Letters to Daniel Wallard, 1946-1947.

Three letters from Edouard Pignon to Daniel Wallard. In a letter dated 4/23/46 Pignon acknowledges that both are members of the Communist Party; he enrolled in 1933 while he was still a factory worker and a weekend painter. He discusses the basic notions of socialist realism, content and form. A letter of 2/10/47 is written from Ostende, where he is working on his "Ostende" series, "certainement quelque chose d'autre que les 'Catalanes'." He has traveled to Stockholm and is going later to Trouville, which reminds him of a wonderful landscape by Bonnard. He has visited the 87 year old Ensor, "un homme d'esprit et un peintre remarcable...de la lignée de vrais flamands ironiques et savoureux." An undated thank you note for the clipping sent by Wallard with his article on A[ragon] published in "Argus" is probably also from 1947, since Pignon is preparing an exhibition that will open in Brussels at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in February.
